Yang Yingfu: Father of gastroscopy in China

A 3-meter-tall statue stands in the First Affiliated Hospital of Lanzhou University which was elaborately carved by He E, a famous sculpture master in China, in honor of Yang Yingfu, the chief founder of Lanzhou University's clinical medicine discipline and the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals, an important founder of modern medicine in Gansu Province, "father of gastroscope" in China and a famous expert of digestive system.

Yang Yingfu, a native of Zhuji, Zhejiang, was admitted to Shanghai Medical College in 1932. After the establishment of the National Northwest Medical College in 1942, Yang Yingfu, then head of Tianshui Railway Hospital, came to Lanzhou alone and worked as a lecturer of Northwest Medical College and attending physician of Lanzhou Central Hospital (the predecessor of General Hospital of Lanzhou Military Region). In 1946, Yang Yingfu was appointed as an associate professor in the newly established School of Medicine of National Lanzhou University. In 1947, Yang Yingfu passed the qualification of studying in the United States. Under the guidance of his mentor, Yang Yingfu not only carefully studied the latest development in gastroenterology after World War II, but also studied gastroscopy taught by W. L. Palmer and Sind. In January 1949, he returned to School of Medicine of Lanzhou University and worked as a professor in the internal medicine department and then was appointed the president of the Affiliated Hospital of School of Medicine of Lanzhou University in the same year.
