Lanzhou in Gansu Province is the only capital city in China where the Yellow River passes through. In 1909, Zhongshan Bridge, a Yellow River railway bridge in Lanzhou, was officially completed. At present, the 110-year-old Zhongshan Bridge still boasts its majestic appearance in the Lanzhou section of the Yellow River. In addition, more than 20 modern bridges have been built to connect the two sides of the River. These bridges have “turned natural barriers into thoroughfares” and they are the landmarks for tourists to appreciate the scenery on both sides of the Yellow River and to understand Lanzhou's history and culture.[photo by Fan Peikun]
