On July 7th, the 209th session of the Executive Board of UNESCO was held in Paris, France. Officials from 58 countries, regions and international organizations attended the meeting. Through strict examination, 15 geoparks across the world, including Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, were elevated to UNESCO World Geoparks.
Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park is located in Zhangye City with Yugur Autonomous County of Sunan as the center, covering an area of 1289.71 square kilometers. The Park is located at the boundary of the first step between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Inner Mongolia Plateau, in the middle of the northern slope of Qilian Mountain, and in the transition zone between Qilian Mountain and Hexi Corridor. The Jiugequan Ophiolite Suite in the southwest of the Park is an important part of the ocean crust 500 million years ago, which truly records the evolution of ancient Qilian Ocean into Qilian Mountain. The colorful hills are like colorful silk fluttering on the Hexi Corridor, which is one of the wonders of geoscience in the world for its diverse colors, unique shapes and large scale. The unique window lattice----palace-like Danxia landform is a representative of Danxia landform in northern China. The precious and beautiful geological relics, fragile yet diverse ecological landscapes, profound and unique ethnic customs blend together perfectly to form the rich and colorful geographical resources of Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park.
