On May 25, the 4th National Urban Domestic Waste Sorting Publicity Week, co-hosted by the Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Gansu Province and the Lanzhou Urban Management Commission, kicked off. Representatives from the Lanzhou Municipal Development and Reform Commission, Municipal Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Municipal Bureau of Commerce, urban management and sanitation departments of main urban areas, relevant enterprises and volunteers attended the event.

The Publicity Week runs from May 25 to 31, with the theme "Recycle for a New Life, Sorting Becomes a New Trend". A series of special activities are launched simultaneously, including recycling workshops, waste sorting campaigns for every household, green experience sessions, volunteer services, display of smart equipment and experience sharing. These initiatives comprehensively popularize waste sorting knowledge and drive the green and low-carbon development of the city.

At the event site, staff distributed materials including the Initiative on Garbage Sorting, Guidance Manual on Domestic Garbage Sorting for Citizens, and Administrative Measures for Urban Domestic Garbage Sorting in Lanzhou to the public. They explained garbage sorting knowledge, answered questions about waste disposal, helped citizens quickly master sorting skills, and guided them to develop good habits of classified waste disposal.

Citizens learn knowledge about waste sorting

"Over the past few years of work and activities, I have truly felt that residents' awareness of environmental protection has been steadily improving," said volunteer Sun Zeyuan. The volunteer team popularizes waste sorting knowledge among different groups of people through interesting lectures, case sharing and on-site Q&A sessions. Meanwhile, the team regularly organizes training on sorting standards and common mistakes. They help classify the four categories of waste in residential communities, promptly correct mixed and incorrect disposal of garbage, and ensure the effective implementation of waste sorting.

Gao Yi, Director of the Urban Management Office of Lanzhou Anning District Urban Management Bureau, introduced that the district has focused on four key areas: facility improvement, daily management and control, publicity and guidance, and resource recycling. It has improved the whole-chain system covering waste disposal including dumping, collection, transportation and treatment, achieving full coverage and standardized regular operation across residential communities, government offices, schools, commercial areas and markets. Meanwhile, the district has smoothed the circulation channels for recyclables and increased the utilization rate of renewable resources. Waste items are turned into reusable resources through recycling, which helps reduce waste volume, add value to resources and improve the overall environment.

"Taking this publicity week as an opportunity, we will organize various activities including outdoor centralized promotion, on-site observation and experience sessions, and campaigns to promote convenient waste recycling. We will spread waste sorting knowledge to every household, advance the standardization, efficiency and regular implementation of domestic waste sorting across the city, and drive the high-quality development of waste sorting work," said Gao Huanhuan, Deputy Chief of the Waste Sorting Section of Lanzhou Urban Management Commission.
