To warmly celebrate the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, inherit the red gene, continue the spiritual bloodline, and promote the creative transformation and innovative development of red culture, the large-scale multimedia choral drama "Song of Nie Er" "Singing the National Anthem by the Yellow River" will be spectacularly staged at Lanzhou Concert Hall every night at 8 PM on June 29 and 30, bringing Jincheng audiences a red audio-visual feast that combines ideological depth and artistic height.
This performance is jointly produced by the China Conservatory of Music and Lanzhou Grand Theatre, coordinated by the Art Practice Center of the China Conservatory of Music, and produced by the Lanzhou Grand Theatre's Creative Department. It is a major stage play and production project funded by the National Arts Fund for 2025. Since its first round of performances in 2024, the production has received high praise both inside and outside the industry for its innovative artistic forms and profound historical significance.
It is understood that the production "Nie Er's Song" is based on the mission of literature and art in the new era, adhering to the concept of upholding tradition and innovation. It centers on the brief yet glorious life trajectory of Nie Er, author of "March of the Volunteers," with original songs and instrumental pieces as the core content. It innovatively integrates symphonic choral singing, dramatic storytelling, and modern multimedia stage technology to create a uniquely distinctive new type of multimedia choral drama.
The production is chief planner by Professor Li Xincao, president of the China Conservatory of Music and conductor, bringing together the country's top creative team and a top-quality lineup. This Lanzhou debut marks the sixth major round of the production. The Lanzhou Grand Theatre has carefully refined and upgraded the stage presentation, gathering over 200 elite actors to form a performance team that vividly portrays lively characters such as street newsboys, cultural celebrities, teachers, and rural women. The show provides a panoramic recreation of the turbulent revolutionary era and delicately recreates Nie Er's journey of using music as a blade, giving voice to the nation, and forging the soul of the times.
Under the passionate leadership of young conductor Wei Xudong, the entire performance perfectly blended grand symphonic choral singing with sincere and moving dramatic interpretation. The stage employs an artistic approach that combines expressive expression with realistic presentation, relying on immersive multimedia scenes, richly layered theatrical lighting, and original costumes that reflect the spirit of the era to create a stage space full of atmosphere. Throughout the production, the production maintains a reverence for history in its creations. The vast majority of the music comes from Nie Er's original works or is adapted from original material, preserving the historical appearance and artistic core of the classic to the greatest extent, using musical storytelling to connect the plot and achieve dual empowerment between singing art and dramatic expression.
This Lanzhou performance of "Song of Nie Er" is not only an important cultural event dedicated to the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China by the Golden City Lanzhou, but also a vivid practice of deepening cooperation between the two local art troupes and jointly promoting the prosperity of the arts. The performance will further enrich the cultural connotations of the Yellow River's shore, polish Lanzhou's red cultural tourism brand, and use the power of art to inherit the red bloodline and unite the strength to forge ahead, allowing red classics to breathe new life into the new era.
